Italy - Day 3: Mt. Etna exists ;)

Today was another short hiking day. I descended through forest and over pastures towards a big road. Maps.me had been wrong with one trail, because it was none existent. So I had to fight a short way out of thorny bushes and over fences. But I got to see Mt. Etna the first time today (first time after 3 days!!!), which has a light layer of new snow on top. However, I saw it only for a short moment before it disappeared in the clouds again.

I hiked along some roads, where I was able to sneak off some figs and grapes. I entered Mt. Etna National Park and ascended slowly. Again, my route was on some non existing roads, so I climbed over fences, walked through an orchard and avoided a big flock of sheep, with dogs barking at me from all sides. I was happy, once I was on an existing path again ;)

I passed a picnic spot with lots of people, but took a break neverthelesw on one of the many benches to eat, and drink water from the water fountains. Seems like my additional water I carried was unnecessary - at least at that point. It might come in handy tomorrow, since I might not pass any water! Shortly after starting again, I could hear thunder close by. I continued my hike, until it started to drizzle. I found a hidden camp spot on the lava-gravel between pine trees and called it a day. Early, but I couldn't have continued too much longer anyways, since the forest will end soon.

Interestingly, everything here is a pasture and there are fences everywhere. Even in the National Park, there are cows and pigs in the forest. They also seem to cut trees, so not sure what makes it a National Park...

A short glimpse of Mt. Etna

Very nice: some ledders to escape

That's what I am sleeping on tonight - quite comfy :)
