Italy - Day 4: Perfect Etna weather

Today wasn't my day, although it was the perfect weather to visit Mt Etna. It was very cold in the morning, so I started late and with gloves.

I walked through the forest and took a wrong track, which I just discovered when I was already quite a bit up. So I decided to contour around to the other trail, but it was lots of up and down over old lava.

When I was finally on the right track, it already left the forest and ascended over lava. There were some more small forest patches with easier walking, but it wasn't necessarily pleasant and I was anyways unmotivated. So I decided to take a long break on a lava plateau, where I found some water puddles. Perfect, since I was already thirsty and low on water considering that I would probably not pass any water anymore today. The water must be from yesterday's rain, so I drank some of it.

I had planned to go up much higher, but didn't feel like it. So I just had a short look into Grotta del Gelo, which really had lots of ice in it - sadly no ice-crem though ;) Then I descended quickly since clouds had formed and just passed by. Another few long breaks in the forest,  before I decided to make a tiny little loop around Monte Spagnolo, over pastures and through forest. Everything else would have meant lots of up and backtracking the same way!

I passed Rifugio Monte Santa Maria, where there was water. The sign said non-portable and it was slightly yellow, but I took some anyways. But I think I won't need it. Since I basically didn't walk today, I wasn't very thirsty.

Another Rifugio on my way down, before I was looking for a campspot. Here are paths everywhere, but I think I found a decent spot in a chestnut plantation, that is also a pasture. I can't wait for the chestnuts to be ripe :)

Beautiful morning
