Greece - Day 38: A sad day - going back to Karpenisi

What a day...

I was totally excitet this morning and awake to go hiking in beautiful weather. But then, when I had breakfast I moved my right foot and it was knsanely painful. Every movement!!!

At first I thought I just made a bad move and if I get my food moving, it'll be OK, but no way. It hurt like hel,l even without putting any weight on it. So I took some painkillers and decided to continue the 1.5 km on my trail to the next road, hoping it'll get better and maybe I can continue.

But despite the painkillers, my ankle hurt. At the road I discovered, that there is no car and probably will be no car for a while. So I walked towards Karpenisi. Karpenisi is the only bigger town here in this area, has a hospital and so it was actually pretty good timing, that my ankle hurt now.

I walked all the 7.5 km down to Karpenisi, since there was basically no traffic and at the end, hiking wasn't too bad - probably the painkiller kicked in! And the weather was sooooo good - sigh! I was wondering if I shouldn't just continue... but hell, I want to walk my entire life and I'm not going to mess up my feet!!!

I walked to the hospital and luckily there were enough English speaking people, to explain my problem. The doctor said it's not his specialty  he goings I should get antiflamatories and rest, but if I come back at 2 pm  another doctor could have a look. I got an x-ray and then left.

I found a spot in the sun near the hospital with free wifi. Checked out my options in case I have a week of non hiking. Karpenisi is bloody expensive (rooms start at 40€, ghere is no campsite and airbnb is even more expensive), so I walked to the bus terminal to find out about buses. There are only daily buses to Athens, which stop in Lamia. Today would be one at 4:30 pm for 25€. Then I checked the cheapest hotels I could find on booking and asked for their prices, if I would stay longer. Not cheaper :(

Back at the hospital I had to wait for a short moment, since they had a car accident coming in. The doctor just pressed on one spot of my foot, looked at the x-rays and decided that it is a sprained ankle. Put a bandage around, gave me a prescription for the antiflammatory painkillers, said I should put ice on it and rest a few days.

I went to the pharmacy and checked rooms again. There was a really cheap one on booking (34€) for the next night, but it must have been a mistake, since they charged me their original price. But thanks to a screen shot I made (really always do this now, since I had that once before and couldn't proof it!) and a short chat with the service people, I will get the money back they overcharged me. I went to a supermarket to by frozen peas. First I wanted to buy ice-cream, but they had only massive packages and they are hard to put on an ankle :) Then I walked a little up the hill to camp. I walked further than I wanted, because there was a very persistent helpful Greek person, who wanted to lead me to the E4 and warned me sbout the dheep dogs...

But now I am laying in my tent, the foot on the frozen peas and tomorrow I will have a room booked in Karpenisi. I am still hoping I can start hiking again the day after, but when the painkiller wore off today, walking up to find a campsite, it hurt pretty much!

A wonderful day!!!!!
